We are delighted to share the first recipient of the Design History Society’s Decolonising Design History Grant, Mariana Salgado, for the project ‘Decolonising Design Through Dialogue’.
Through the medium of podcast, this series features conversations with designers, artists, and researchers from India, Argentina, Spain, Ghana, the USA, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Australia, Ecuador, and Paraguay. The episodes delve into design research, textile design, and design history, exploring their connections to ancestral knowledge, Indigenous communities, and more-than-human perspectives.
This trilingual series – available in Portuguese, Spanish, and English – is available to listen to here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1knZCSoYrgND8IFHh3xLZ4?si=4da34a19d94b4022&nd=1&dlsi=4bd303987bf743d0
The Decolonising Design History Grant was created to recognise and support ground-breaking research and projects that actively contribute to the decolonisation of design history. We define decolonisation as the process of deconstructing colonial ideologies in the study of design history, amplifying marginalised voices, and revaluating historical narratives from a critical perspective.
Please note that all funds for the 2025 round of this grant have now been allocated. This grant will re-open for applications on 1st January 2026.
