Call for Papers - DHS Student Forum: Lightning Talks

The DHS Student Forum invites submissions for a series of Lightning Talks to be held online on 2nd September inspired by the 2023 annual conference theme 'Displaying Design: History, Criticism and Curatorial Discourses'.

This year, the conference explores how design exhibitions and exhibition design have a central place in the history of design, providing us with significant milestones for understanding how designers, schools, companies, and organisations have publicly displayed work, values, and ideas.

We invite students from anywhere in the world, whose work intersects with the above topic, to submit an abstract for a 5 minute lightning talk. Themes can include, but are not limited to:

  • Instances of exhibitions, or displays of design, that challenge established methods of design history.
  • Landmark exhibitions of design that have played a part in shaping current design histories.
  • Designerly or curatorial strategies that have experimented with the design object’s relationship to its viewer.
  • Objects that are designed for display outside of an museological or institutional context (homewares, kitchen appliances, etc.).
  • Design and display in a post-material context: internet, mixed reality, and virtual reality exhibitions and displays.
  • The availability/accessibility of exhibitions and archives and how that shapes inclusivity in both the writing and learning of design history.

We particularly encourage submissions of works in progress or talks that pose questions rather than give answers.

Please submit an abstract of 150 words and a biography of 50 words to the DHS Administrator Jenna Allsopp by 23:59pm UCT on Tuesday 25th July - designhistorysociety@gmail.com
