Announcing Prof. Anne Massey as the Guest Judge for the 2024 DHS Design Writing Prize

We are delighted to announce that Prof. Anne Massey is the Guest Judge for the Design Writing Prize 2024. This prestigious international prize is awarded annually by the Design History Society. Entry forms and detailed information are available here. The deadline for entries is 31 May 2024.

Anne Massey is Professorial Fellow in the School of Architecture and Design at the University for the Creative Arts in Canterbury, the host of this year’s Annual Design History Society conference. She enjoys the practice of writing and delights in encouraging others and will be contributing to the Publication Workshop in September 2024. She has written ten books which look at design and its relationship with the broader contexts of architecture, art, craft and mass culture: Interior Design Since 1900 (Thames & Hudson, 1990, 4th Edition, 2020); Blue Guide: Berlin and Eastern Germany (A & C Black, 1994); The Independent Group: Modernism and Mass Culture in Britain, 1945-59 (Manchester University Press, 1996); Hollywood Beyond the Screen: Design and Material Culture (Berg, 2000); Designing Liners: Interior Design Afloat (Routledge, 2006, 2nd edition 2021); Chair (Reaktion, 2011); Out of the Ivory Tower: The Independent Group and Popular Culture (Manchester University Press, 2013); ICA 1946-68 (ICA, 2015); Dorothy Morland: Making ICA History (Liverpool University Press, 2020) and Women in Design (Thames & Hudson, 2022). Her latest book, Writing & Publishing in Architecture & Design will be published by Routledge in July 2024. She has also edited and co-edited seven design related books and contributed to the Journal of Design History, Journal of Architecture and Culture and the Journal of Visual Culture as well as being the founding co-editor of Interiors: Design, Archiecture, Culture. She is currently working on a book proposal with Harriet McKay, (Re) Making: Craft-Design and Women’s Empowerment in the Global South, based on a DHS-funded virtual event. She has appeared on BBC radio and television plus Channel 4 tv and written for the Designer’s Journal, Traditional Interior Decoration and Art Monthly.
