August 15th 2008

This year’s BA prize: ‘A study of the gecekondu in Instanbul, Turkey: Innovative Urbanism for the West and the Global Urban Poor’ by Miranda Iossifides, a student on the Graphic and Media Design BA at the London College of Communication, University of the Arts London. Drawing on primary and wide-ranging secondary sources, the ambitious essay provided a thoughtful account of the complexities of the gecekondu’s history and design, proposing it as a model of hybrid urbanization.

The winning postgraduate essay ‘Design Change in American Motels, 1945- 1970’ by Elizabeth Bisley from the RCA/V&A course stood out in its elegant integration of sources from film and literature, to a discussion of issues of materiality, gender, and race, the last two of which led to a careful reassessment of Augé non-place thesis.
